- Michael Szabo is a talented quarterback who plays for the Vienna Vikings. He was recently accepted into the NFL Academy where he will prove himself over the next seven months at Loughborough. His talent has not only been recognized by the NFL Academy coaches, but has also been honored in Austria where he was named Most Valuable Player (MVP). Szabo leaves his native Austria as MVP and is proud to have received this award in his final game for the Vikings.
- The NFL Academy is known for helping young athletes around the world fulfill their big dream of playing professionally on American soil. As of now, one of the players selected is Michael Szabo, who is still in high school and received the call for his own scholarship shortly before the Iron Bowl. The suitcases, which were recently used at the U20 World Cup, were packed, the team led in the final and then set off on time for Loughborough.
- The young talent has received a lot of support from the Vikings. “He has developed excellently over the years and has become the kind of quarterback you could only wish for,” says his U18 AFL Head Coach Benjamin Sobotka. “The fact that Mikey can show the football he has learned with us and, together with the exposure that the NFL Academy offers, against top high schools from America, makes me really happy for him!”
- The U20 World Championships have already shown that Austria is well on the way to training home-grown talent: “We must not be satisfied with what we have achieved so far, but continue to work on the next step. The work being done in Europe by academies like ours in Vienna is beginning to bear fruit. Of course, the ELF is also contributing to this,” says Sobotka. For him, Austrian NFL players such as Bernhard Seikovits and Bernhard Raimann are just the beginning. They too were once in the Purple Club.
- The next important date for the Vikings in Austria is coming up: the Austrian Bowl. Next Sunday, the Purple Club will play the grand final of Austria’s top league for the first time in Wiener Neustadt. Even if the 19-year-old can’t be there live, he will be keeping his fingers crossed for his team from afar and hopes that the Vikings can end the 2024 season with a win.
